Thirteen Questions You CANNOT Ask At Your Interview

Sooner or later you’ll actually get an interview. A common thread at the end of interviews is to give you a chance to ask questions about the company. The questions you ask can be at least as important as the interview questions you answered. If you ask the wrong question, you’re out. Here is a list of the questions you cannot ask, and why.

One general rule of thumb is never to ask about salary, vacation, benefits or bonuses. Do not ask any question until you are in offer negotiation stage that hints at money or benefits. Here are some others:

  1. Mr. Employer, your search is over. You will not find anyone else more qualified to do this job that I.  If I were you, I’d cancel all the other interviews and make me an offer.

Why you can’t ask it.

Ouch!  WAY too salesy!

  1. Presuming that I’m successful on this assignment, where else might I be of service to the company?

Why you can’t ask it.

This is a bad question because it indicates that you might want to “hop around” the company instead of staying put.  It also indicates you might be a “climber.”

  1. The job description mentions weekend work, are you serious?

Why you can’t ask it.

Slacker alert!

  1. 4.      What additional training should I take to be of the best use to the company?

Why you can’t ask it.

You should already know this.

  1. What are my responsibilities as a team leader/member?

Why you can’t ask it.

You should already know this.

  1. What are some of the best attributes of incentive systems?

Why you can’t ask it.

Money question.

  1. What are some of the skills and abilities you see as necessary for someone to succeed in this job?

Why you can’t ask it.

You should already know this.

  1. What convinced you to come to incentive systems?

Why you can’t ask it.

None of your business and money question.

  1. What do you see in me? What are my strongest assets and possible weaknesses? Do you have any concerns that I need to clear up in order to be the top candidate? What is the likelihood, in percent terms, that you will make me an offer?

Why you can’t ask it.

Too aggressive.

  1. What does the position pay?

Why you can’t ask it.

Do not ask about money, salary, bonuses, vacations or time off until you are discussing an offer or they bring it up.

  1. What is my spending/budget authority?

Why you can’t ask it.

You would likely be told this at some point.

  1. What is the commission structure, and what is my earning potential in 1, 3, 5, or 10 years?

Why you can’t ask it.

Do not ask about money, salary, bonuses, vacations or time off until you are discussing an offer or they bring it up.

  1. What is your “learning plan” for me for my first six months? Does the company have a specific program to advance my career?

Why you can’t ask it.

Shows you’re interested in yourself only and not the company goals.

Avoid these questions at all costs!
